Haas Door Products Selected for THIS OLD HOUSE® 2018 Idea House in Narragansett, Rhode Island

We’re pleased to share with you that American Tradition Series™ carriage-style garage doors from Haas Door have been chosen for the THIS OLD HOUSE® 2018 IDEA HOUSE in Narragansett, Rhode Island. The Craftsman-style home is being constructed by Sweenor Builders, Inc. and will be featured in the October and November/December issues of This Old House magazine and in segments of the 2018-2019 season of the Emmy Award-winning TV series This Old House.

“We’re honored to participate in this high-profile project,” says Jeffrey Nofziger, president of Haas Door . “The elegant American Tradition series doors selected for this home will include our Specialty Glass option to complement the overall design of the home and free-standing garage.”

The 2,700-square-foot cottage was designed by Union Studio Community Architecture & Design out of Providence, Rhode Island. Located less than a mile from the town beach, the home epitomizes what buyers are looking for today: a smaller home that lives large in a tight-knit community. The free-standing garage serves as part of an “active living” backyard space that includes a patio with spa, fire pit, pergola swings, outdoor kitchen and open-air shower.

The two-inch thick steel garage doors in the American Tradition Series selected for the garage feature CFC-free polyurethane insulation with a calculated R-value of 13.45. Overlay boards add distinction and a traditional carriage house look. Available as single or double doors, with solid top section designs or several window options, the garage doors come in 13 solid color options plus four wood grain base options.

The skilled team at South Shore Garage Door in Charleston, Rhode Island will install the garage doors on the THIS OLD HOUSE® 2018 IDEA HOUSE in the coming months as construction of the home progresses. The public will be invited to tour the completed home during an Open House Celebration Party on Saturday, August 11, 2018. At that event the public will have the opportunity to meet sponsors of the home project along with some installers, like the team at South Shore Garage Door, who worked on the home.

What's New at Haas Door?

When Mademan Design’s Patrick Knobloch was brought on to transform a former St. Louis auto dealership into Makers Yard — a multi-tenant restaurant hub anchoring the city’s new Delmar Maker District — the building’s industrial bones provided an excellent starting point. The challenge, however, was creating a meaningful indoor-outdoor connection across a series of large storefront openings while honoring what the building once was. Haas Door’s aluminum and glass full view sectional doors ended up playing a bigger role in solving that problem than anyone might have expected — right down to surviving an EF3 tornado with zero damage. We asked Knobloch to walk us through the project, the product decisions and what he’d tell other architects working on similar commercial applications.

Every May, Home Improvement Month gives homeowners a nudge to step back and think about the projects that would make the biggest difference — the upgrades that have been sitting on the list a little too long. If you’re not sure where to start this spring, we’d make the case for your garage door. It’s the largest moving part of your home, one of the most visible features of your exterior, and — depending on what door you have — either a significant vulnerability or a serious asset. Here’s why upgrading to a new Haas Door this spring is one of the smartest home improvement decisions you can make.

Energy efficiency is often discussed in terms of windows, insulation and HVAC systems. But one of the largest and most frequently used openings in a home is often overlooked: the garage door. Because the garage connects directly to the living space in many homes, the performance of the garage door affects more than just curb appeal. It plays a meaningful role in comfort, efficiency and long-term home performance. That’s why the way a garage door is built matters.
