Garage Doors With Flood Vents Ideal for Riverside Boat House Location
Situated alongside the Norwalk River in Connecticut sits a massive two-story warehouse holding dozens of colorful crew racing boats. Constructed by King Industries, the building currently stores row boats for Maritime Rowing Club. Large, durable garage doors from Haas Door allow for easy access to the boats plus accommodate overflowing river conditions.
Specially-designed flood vents were incorporated into the lower section of the first floor garage doors allow river water to move in and through the boat house if the Norwalk River should overflow its banks.
“We needed garage doors that were able to withstand riverfront conditions without rusting,” says Charlie Paoli, vice president of Crawford Overhead Doors out of Stratford, Conn. “That included the precaution of incorporating water louvers into the bottom panels of the garage doors. This way, if the river does overflow, the water flows in the three lower riverfront doors, through the building, and out the flood vents in the two back garage doors.”
Impressive Garage Doors
The five lower level doors of the project feature Haas Door Commercial Aluminum doors. With heavy-duty frames, these commercial garage doors are operational and wind load rated. As with the three operable upper level doors, all the 10-feet by 9-feet garage doors in the structure are painted gray. Full-view window panels (with five panels across) maximize the flow of light into the structure.
“This is one of the most unique projects we’ve ever worked on,” says Paoli. “Rather than be defeated by the close riverside location of the building the designers made it work in their favor. Boaters are just steps away from the river. And now, if the river overflows its banks, the water won’t damage the building.”
Dependable History
Started more than 65 years ago, Crawford Overhead Doors specializes in commercial and industrial jobs. The company does a great deal of state and government work throughout the Fairfield and New Haven counties of Connecticut.
“We find Haas Door products exceptionally reliable,” says Paoli. “The quality is top-notch and they have custom capabilities.”
