Facelifts for Older Garages

Haas Door • February 5, 2019

Sometimes worn out garage doors simply need to be replaced to give a “facelift” to a home exterior. That’s the experience Palmerton Garage Doors has regularly as they replace older garage doors in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas of Pennsylvania.

In December of last year, one project truly stood out for its uniqueness. A triple-car garage with beautiful ivy covering the home’s brick exterior.

“The homeowners were looking to refresh their exterior with new garage doors that were more efficient and appealing than their older wooden doors,” says Ned Biege, president and owner of Palmerton Garage Doors out of Palmerton, Penn. “We helped them select garage doors from Haas Door that truly complement their garage.”

According to Biege, the color and design of the steel doors from Haas Door provide a nice contrast with the brick, roofline and ivy on the garage. “We continually recommend Haas Door products,” says Biege. “Almost 95 percent of our business in 2018 involved Haas Door installations … that’s more than 800 garage doors!”

For the triple-car garage project, the team at Palmerton Garage Doors installed a ranch-style panel (Model 770) in the Insulated Steel 700 Series from Haas Door in Mahogany. The bi-directional vertical wood grain pattern on the panel and stile contrast with a horizontal pattern on the rails, creating the appearance of a real wood door.

With a calculated R-Value of 16.18, the 26-gauge galvanized steel doors are ideal for maximizing energy efficiency in the garage setting. The 1-3/4-inch thick full thermal break doors feature a lifetime warranty against rust and delamination along with a 10-year warranty on the wood grain finish.

“We repeatedly recommend Haas Door garage doors because they offer a good quality product with strong R-values and an abundance of style options,” says Biege. “In our area we’re installing Haas Door products on every type of structure from custom homes to the buildings housing the township fire department!”

Choosing the right garage door is only half the equation. The other half is the person who shows up to make it happen — measuring the space, walking you through the options, answering the questions you didn’t know you had and making sure everything is done right. That’s what Haas Door’s authorized dealers and installers do every day. In honor of SuperTech Day, we asked a few recent customers to share what that experience looked like for them.

When Mademan Design’s Patrick Knobloch was brought on to transform a former St. Louis auto dealership into Makers Yard — a multi-tenant restaurant hub anchoring the city’s new Delmar Maker District — the building’s industrial bones provided an excellent starting point. The challenge, however, was creating a meaningful indoor-outdoor connection across a series of large storefront openings while honoring what the building once was. Haas Door’s aluminum and glass full view sectional doors ended up playing a bigger role in solving that problem than anyone might have expected — right down to surviving an EF3 tornado with zero damage. We asked Knobloch to walk us through the project, the product decisions and what he’d tell other architects working on similar commercial applications.

Every May, Home Improvement Month gives homeowners a nudge to step back and think about the projects that would make the biggest difference — the upgrades that have been sitting on the list a little too long. If you’re not sure where to start this spring, we’d make the case for your garage door. It’s the largest moving part of your home, one of the most visible features of your exterior, and — depending on what door you have — either a significant vulnerability or a serious asset. Here’s why upgrading to a new Haas Door this spring is one of the smartest home improvement decisions you can make.

Energy efficiency is often discussed in terms of windows, insulation and HVAC systems. But one of the largest and most frequently used openings in a home is often overlooked: the garage door. Because the garage connects directly to the living space in many homes, the performance of the garage door affects more than just curb appeal. It plays a meaningful role in comfort, efficiency and long-term home performance. That’s why the way a garage door is built matters.
