Alaska Fire Stations Rely on Haas Door Garage Doors

When the alarm sounds at Station 6-2 in Wasilla, Alaska, the garage doors roll up fast. The new firehouse, built in late 2018, includes four bays filled with emergency equipment. Each bay has a durable steel Haas Door garage door.

“We’ve been selling and installing Haas Door products since 2000,” says Jason Slater, project/operations manager for Door Systems of Alaska . “We cover the entire great state of Alaska. No matter what project we’re working on, the high quality of the Haas Door garage doors fit the job perfectly.”

The 49th State
Alaska, which is more than twice the size of Texas, covers a vast 656,425 square miles. For this project, Station 6-2, part of Mat-Su Fire Department, was designed by Burkhart Croft Architects , out of Anchorage. This new station, in Wasilla, serves an amazing 140-square mile radius.

Insulated Steel 2000 Series doors were used for the Wasilla fire station project. Each garage door is 14-feet tall and includes a full-view section of glass. The 26-gauge galvanized steel doors feature full thermal breaks and two-inch thick CFC-free polyurethane interiors with a 17.66 calculated R-Value. The doors were ordered in +34.1/-38.0 PSF wind loads to help handle the brutal winter weather and extremely high winds known in this region.

Fire Stations Across Alaska
“There’s also a single CA320i Series garage door in the station featuring heavy-duty aluminum with an all-glass design displaying an antique fire truck,” says Slater. “This is one of several fire stations where we’ve installed garage doors in Alaska. We have another large fire station renewal job at Kodiak Island for the U.S. Coast Guard and several more coming up in the future.

“Haas Door manufactures the best product on the market. We’ve installed these garage doors in projects from Cold Bay to Prudhoe Bay. Alaska has some rough weather conditions. When we install Haas Doors on commercial and residential projects, we know they’re going to stand up to our Alaska conditions.”

What's New at Haas Door?

When Mademan Design’s Patrick Knobloch was brought on to transform a former St. Louis auto dealership into Makers Yard — a multi-tenant restaurant hub anchoring the city’s new Delmar Maker District — the building’s industrial bones provided an excellent starting point. The challenge, however, was creating a meaningful indoor-outdoor connection across a series of large storefront openings while honoring what the building once was. Haas Door’s aluminum and glass full view sectional doors ended up playing a bigger role in solving that problem than anyone might have expected — right down to surviving an EF3 tornado with zero damage. We asked Knobloch to walk us through the project, the product decisions and what he’d tell other architects working on similar commercial applications.

Every May, Home Improvement Month gives homeowners a nudge to step back and think about the projects that would make the biggest difference — the upgrades that have been sitting on the list a little too long. If you’re not sure where to start this spring, we’d make the case for your garage door. It’s the largest moving part of your home, one of the most visible features of your exterior, and — depending on what door you have — either a significant vulnerability or a serious asset. Here’s why upgrading to a new Haas Door this spring is one of the smartest home improvement decisions you can make.

Energy efficiency is often discussed in terms of windows, insulation and HVAC systems. But one of the largest and most frequently used openings in a home is often overlooked: the garage door. Because the garage connects directly to the living space in many homes, the performance of the garage door affects more than just curb appeal. It plays a meaningful role in comfort, efficiency and long-term home performance. That’s why the way a garage door is built matters.
