Rebuilding Dream Workshop with Haas Doors
On June 25, 2020, Ken Schwiebert’s dream workshop went up in flames. Lost were tools he’d inherited and collected over his lifetime. When it came time to rebuild, Schwiebert followed the exact same footprint for the space, with one major exception. This time he added in Haas garage doors.
“I designed, planned and built this three-bay garage myself,” says Schwiebert, a dentist in Williston, Florida. “This was a free-standing 40’ x 60’ building that held my ideal workshop, a storage area above the garage section of the structure, and a small office space. The fire was a heartbreaking experience in so many ways.”
Relying on Haas Garage Doors
As Schwiebert started restoring the workshop after the fire, he contacted Rod Hatch at Gainesville Garage Door in Florida. Hatch had previously helped him select Haas Insulated Steel 760 Model garage doors for a separate carriage house on his farm.
The carriage house was built between 2018 to 2020 to store his carriages, wagon and tack, so he could make space to put his vehicles in the original shop structure again. A personal favorite for Schwiebert is an antique farm wagon that belonged to his great-grandfather in the late 1800s. It was made in Ohio and completely restored in the workshop by Schwiebert.
I’m originally from northwestern Ohio, where Haas Door is located. I figured I wanted to support my heritage area, so I chose the Haas Door for the carriage house,” says Schwiebert.
With a new need for garage doors, Schwiebert again decided on products from Haas Door.
“I knew from my first experience with Haas Door that I would use them eventually to replace the garage doors on the barn,” says Schwiebert. “I really like the durability and looks of the Haas garage doors.
“After the fire, I decided on three Haas Insulated Steel 680 model white garage doors with the raised panel pattern to stand out. For the windows I selected insulated glass. I had them placed at a level so that I could easily look out of the workshop to see when people are pulling up the driveway.”
Starting Over
Rebuilding the structure was especially difficult because the fire occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials have been slow in coming due to supply chain issues. However, the Haas Door products are now installed.
“It’s been an incredible journey just to get to this point,” says Schwiebert. “Ordering materials, finding people to work on the project, and the weather have all been challenges. Now that the outside looks good again, the work will continue on the inside.
“While I love being in my shop creating things, these days I’m mostly cleaning and replacing items. This will go on for many more months. However, the light at the end of the tunnel is getting back to the woodworking I love … in a completely new shop.”
